Who is Satoshi Nakamoto?
Satoshi Nakamoto is the pseudonym of the person or group who published the Bitcoin white paper on 31 October 2008 and launched the network in January 2009. Satoshi stopped communicating in 2011. Their real identity has never been proven; the only conclusive proof would be a signature from an early Satoshi key or the movement of Satoshi-era coins.
1What is actually known
- Wrote the white paper and the first Bitcoin client, and mined the Genesis block.
- Wrote fluent English, sometimes with British spellings ("colour", "favour").
- Claimed on a P2P Foundation profile to be a man living in Japan born in 1975 — widely regarded as cover.
- Posted activity times that cluster around a schedule consistent with the US or UK.
- Handed project leadership to Gavin Andresen in 2010 and wrote in April 2011 of having "moved on to other things."
2People who have been proposed
| Person | Basis of the theory | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Hal Finney | Cryptographer, recipient of the first transaction, early contributor | Denied before his death in 2014; email and running records argue against |
| Nick Szabo | Designed "bit gold"; stylometric similarities | Denied |
| Adam Back | Invented Hashcash, cited in the white paper | Denied |
| Dorian Nakamoto | Named by Newsweek in 2014 | Denied; widely rejected |
| Craig Wright | Publicly claimed to be Satoshi | UK High Court ruled in 2024 that he is not Satoshi[1] |
| Peter Todd | Named in a 2024 HBO documentary | Denied |
| Len Sassaman | Cypherpunk; timing of activity | Died 2011; no direct evidence |
3What would count as proof
A signed message from a key known to belong to Satoshi — for example the key behind the block 9 reward — or an on-chain movement of Patoshi coins. Documents, interviews and court testimony have never been sufficient.
4Why identity matters for the net-worth figure
Rich lists such as Forbes and Bloomberg rank only identified individuals with verifiable assets, which is why Satoshi does not appear on them despite holdings worth about $92.4 billion. If Satoshi were identified and could prove control of the coins, they would immediately rank among the wealthiest people in the world. See Satoshi Nakamoto net worth.
